The underground mass rapid transit (MRT) station began operations on 17 July 2017 when Phase Two of the MRT Kajang Line was opened.

The Pasar Seni (Central Market) station was constructed at the site formerly occupied by the Klang Bus Stand, Plaza Wawasan Complex and the UO Shopping Centre. These three buildings were demolished in 2012 to make way for the MRT station to be constructed.

The completion of the MRT tunneling was very challenging due to the geology of the Bukit Bintang area. Jalan Bukit Bintang straddles two geological formation – the eastern end of Jalan Bukit Bintang sits above the Kuala Lumpur Limestone Formation while the western end is above the Kenny Hill Formation, the transition between these two formation is at the Pavilion area. Another challenge was the highest concentration of utilities, however, the use of high precision engineering technology, including Variable Density TBM (tunnel boring machines) had mitigated the problem.
